Microscopy/Microanalysis Image and Data Repository

Project Description:

The Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) bridges the sciences. It seeks to understand the structure and composition of all materials at atomic, molecular, cellular and macromolecular scales. CMM is a foundation member and the Queensland Node of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility (AMMRF).

Prior to the project, researchers using the CMM facilities had full responsibility for the long-term storage and management of their data. They nominally had a week to retrieve their raw files from CMM's laboratory file server, burn them to a CD/DVD or write them to a memory stick. What they did with the data after that was 'their problem'.

The primary goal of the MIRAGE project was to assist researcher’s using CMM facilities in storing and managing their microscopy data. The project team implemented systems that could:

• Capture instrument metadata, and any available administrative metadata
• Transfer data from instruments into the MIRAGE repository
• Allow users to browse and reorganize their datasets in the repository
• Allow users to view images or upload the files and process them
• Allow users to upload files produced by analysis of their raw data.

The project’s secondary goals were to assist and encourage the sharing and reuse of research data captured using CMM’s facilities and to add a level of accountability and integrity to data collected from the CMM.

The MIRAGE system is now in production supporting 5 (out of 15) of CMM's major instruments, with plans to add most of the remaining instruments in 2013. To date the system has ingested data produced by over 100 different researchers, amounting to 30,000 datasets and 50Gb of storage.

There are currently 4 public / published “collections” in the MIRAGE system syndicated to the Research Data Australia site. Three of these datasets relate to materials used in fuel cells, and the fourth consists of unpublished images from the Winton-Belmot Meteorite. The data files for all collections are available under a “CC BY-NC-ND 3.0” license.

Major challenges ahead relate to encouraging researchers to provide contextual information that would facilitate the interpretation and sharing of electron microscopy data.
