Data Citation Infrastructure Establishment Program

Griffith University

Project Description

Griffith University recognises that better management of research data could enhance the profile of the University and its researchers. Infrastructure and practices in support of data citation are part of this picture. Evidence that open research data can positively impact on publication citation rates is emerging from selected disciplines, and commercial services that aim to formally measure the research impact of data collections have recently been launched. The dissemination of Griffith data assets could also increase informal impact amongst stakeholder communities outside the university sector. Industry, government agencies, schools and not-for-profit organisations could potentially re-use Griffith data to support a range of activities with positive economic, social and cultural outcomes.

Project aims

The Data Citation Infrastructure Establishment Program aimed to enhance infrastructure for data citation, test methodologies for tracking impact (through citation and less formal measures), and provide targeted advice for researchers about benefits.

Project outcomes

The project has contributed to the roadmaps for Griffith research content repositories and discovery services, which now include suggestions for citation-related enhancements such as:

• a ‘citation builder’ that helps depositors to see how the metadata they enter leads to a well-formed citation
• automated depositor notifications that include details of how to cite the deposited collection
• well-formed citation statements displayed on repository landing pages for users to cut and paste into note-taking and word-processing tools
• embedded machine-readable metadata, that will help search engines index scholarly content more effectively, and facilitate citation export to a web-based reference managers like Zotero or Mendeley, and
• citations in formats can be easily downloaded to offline reference managers like Endnote.

These investments in infrastructure will enhance Griffith’s ability to track data citations in publications through the future use of bibliometrics. While our project found the currently available tools and methods for data metrics to be immature, Griffith now has the necessary building blocks in place to take advantage of new developments as they evolve. These building blocks include both prototype technical infrastructure and a draft policy framework for the minting and management of DOIs. Griffith also used this project to explore less traditional ways of measuring impact. Many of Griffith's research focus areas have stakeholders and audiences outside of academia, so evaluation of ‘altmetrics’ tools like ImpactStory was in scope. Again, we found that the available tools and methods are still very much prototypes, but that this will be a promising area for future efforts.

Finally, the project aimed to raise awareness of data citation and impact with data collection owners. This was an important part of the project but also the most challenging. While infrastructure and methods of measuring impacts are evolving rapidly, changes in citation practices will take much longer and require cooperation across all parts of the scholarly publishing ecosystem.

In this context, Griffith has benefitted from the work of ANDS, which has provided information and facilitated discussion with other institutions embarking on similar projects. While the Data Citation Infrastructure Establishment Program formally ended at Griffith in mid-2013, Griffith will continue to be part of the broader ANDS partner community working to develop data citation solutions and services.
