Screen Media Research Archive

RMIT University

Project Description:

The Media Virtual Research Collections (MaVReC) is a virtual collections service designed to integrate cognate but differently structured existing research collections into a responsive, sustainable, user-friendly application for the ingestion, search and retrieval of screen media research. Screen media research is uniquely characterized by a wide range of objects and outputs, such as: datasets, publications (print and online), audio-visual media (photography, film, video and sound including oral histories/interviews as well as creative works), and hypermedia. Cataloguing and archiving each of these research outputs entails different data standards and management protocols and has resulted in disaggregation of research knowledge in the sector. By creating opportunities to interrogate assets and metadata from different collection frameworks, MaVReC aims to bridge the divide between the practice based screen media research (ERA Creative Works) and other forms of research.

High Level Software Functionality:

The system:

* allows users to manage information about research objects, such as films, news archives and books including information about how to access the research object, such as URL or contact details; link to Party records and geographical information

* allows users to manage collections and virtual collections of research objects, with link to party records

* allows users to deposit research information of appropriate kinds

* allows external users to find media objects by searching on discipline appropriate fields

* harvests from, or other otherwise aggregated records from the AFI-RC catalogue

* harvests from, or other otherwise aggregated records from the BONZA catalogue

* supports automated link to external databases such as IMDB and australian screen

* generates RIF-CS Collection, Activity descriptions

* provides OAI-PMH feed to RIF-CS for harvesting by the ARDC

* generates party descriptions about researchers and organisations in the a format used by NLA’s PIP (eg. RIF-CS, EAC.
