Collaborator(s): University of Western Australia, University of Tasmania, University of New South Wales, CSIRO, AIMS

Project Description:

This project is seeking to develop a database framework and acces tools applicable to marine imagery that will facilitate the timely delivery of standardized, quantitative estimates of ecologically relevant indicators (such as absence/presence, percent cover, abundance and distribution of benthic organisms and associated substrates) through the analysis of visual data being produced by AUV, BRUVS, ROV and UTV systems. This will enable the extensive datasets currently available at the collaborating institutions to be consolidated. Much of the raw image data is currently available through online repositories hosted by the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN), but the output of extensive analysis of these images undertaken at institutions around the country is not being captured in these repositories. By bringing this data into the repositories in a standardized way, re-use of this quantitative data and data-mining for patterns in the data will be significantly easier.

Data Type:

Marine data captured by Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and Underwater Towed Video (UTV) systems.
