University of Melbourne Research Data Collections

University of Melbourne

Project Description

The University of Melbourne sits within multiple precincts which provide a platform to advance research, collaboration and public debate. These precincts facilitate the transfer of ideas and people, generate significant amounts of data, and they contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of communities.

With these organisations and initiatives come data sets of national and international significance across a range of areas.

This project will work with the important data collections held by the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences (SEFS). Each holds collections of data which have been assessed as being of substantial historical significance and of high value to research, education and industry sectors, and which would benefit from enhanced data management to fully exploit these rich data sources.

The VCA’s film and television archive is a rich collection of digitised films and associated objects, with extremely high research, historical, aesthetic and industry significance. The SEFS digitised lantern glass slide collection holds significant historical, aesthetic, research and social value for researchers, students, teachers and the public across the world with its well-provenanced and unique collection.

In this project we will utilise online portals to showcase/publish data holdings such as these, and their related precinct communities and research activities, which reach across the University, industry and government. This project will work with the VCA and SEFS collections to explore ways to expose, share and reuse their data, and to broker productive data-centric relationships and projects. The ultimate aim is to maximise research outcomes from these rich data holdings. The project will assist the data owners to:

* Optimally manage their data for widest discoverability, collaboration and reuse,
* Identify and develop relevant synergies amongst the groups, and
* Explore technical and strategic solutions to further the profiling of this valuable data.

These open data collections will be enriched to advance their national, industry and strategic significance, and will leverage important NCRIS funded national initiatives such as the national Research Data Service (RDS) in delivering the data to researchers and the community. Most of the data in these collections will be openly available, and, when enhanced via the activities of the project, will further contribute to the discovery and re-use of this rich data.
